Then, on August 2, 2020, he disappeared. Literally. The Mets announced they had no idea where Céspedes was. Hours later, his agent announced that the player was safe but had opted out of the season, citing COVID-19 concerns. Sadly, his contract expired after that season, and Céspedes has not played an MLB game since.
